Film Festival - Popcorn

Popcorn has a big relevance to cinema. I plan to use this link in my film festival brief and create a popcorn box. Here are some examples, all have similar traits such as as tapered base, made from card, di-cut stylistic openings and colourful prints.

Film Festival / yearbook Inspiration

Here are examples of the style of design I am trying to achieve in my film festival brief, the use of bold type, strong colour and overlaying the two with image creates a strong visual style I feel suits the film festival. Also this style would work well on the yearbook cover to provide a strong, design focused view of the course.

Layout

The different layouts are an influence for a number of briefs; the Yearbook, Horror Festival and recently kick-started Natural Science Museum brief. Each of the briefs are focused around the layout of type and imagery.

Film Festival Logos

Here are some examples of current film festival logos.

I mostly admire the Brooklyn Underground film festival. This is due to the logos simplicity but achievement of identity and appropriate representation of the event. The word 'underground' appears to be sat underneath 'Brooklyn', playing on the word of underground/unknown films hidden by/in Brooklyn. 

Eric Tan

Eric Tan is a commissioned illustrator and mainly poster designer from the US. His work is mainly based on films, usually new releases from Disney. I like his style of illustration, its very original and i admire the level of wit used in his work, such as how objects interact with one another and how only the necessary details can be found to represent objects. I am considering applying a similar style to the film festival brief, however i would most likely acquire the skill of an illustrator to give my type and layout skills something impressive to work with.

Classic Horror Film Posters

I admire the style of classic, old film posters, particularly from the 60s. Here are a few selected horror film posters, illustration is apparent in all of them, this may be an area i could collaborate of commission with an illustrator.

The illustration in this poster is astounding, a great deal of time and planning has been focused into the illustration..I think it really makes the poster admirable. 

This poster also focuses on a highly detailed, impressive illustration, type is also integrated however, with the black clouds overlapping 'mummy', but not effecting readability. I feel this brings the poster together more and this successfully promotes the film.

'Day of the Dead', this poster uses its previous films to deliver the third installment of the 'deads'. Having a clip of the previous poster design at the top takes the reader back through their memory of seeing that film. This is a witty idea as something as simple as a colour change clearly marks a different film. 

Utilising black space, the title of the film stands out more, and works fluently with the illustration, rather than fighting with it. 'Re-Animator' can be noticed from afar, and the detailed illustration can be sunk in when up close. 

I admire the simple illustration in this film poster. The transformation of woman to beast is vitally the main theme throughout the film, this is shown in the poster but not completely parts are left to the audiences apprehension such as what characters turn, what exactly they turn into, how they turn, why they turn, what happens when they turn, and what it looks like in the film, these are points which the illustration does not reveal thanks to its simplicity.

HorrorFest

HorrorFest - 8 films to die for, is an annual horror film festival featuring eight independent horror movies, sometimes with "secret" bonus films, all distributed by After Dark Films in the USA.

The logo and promo posters for HorrorFest are typical of the genre. Bold, blood-splattered, red and black, disturbed effects..these are traits I feel may be worn out however.

Fright Fest

Film 4's Fright Fest is a UK Horror Film Festival.
Based in London and held over August Bank Holiday weekend, Fright Fest compiles the years best horror films.

Screamfest LA

Screamfest LA Horror Film Festival, 10 freight-filled days in October every year.

Film Reel of 2009 Screamfest - I can adapt a clip like this, which integrates real film footage with festival branding, for my film festival.

The logo and promo poster for Screamfest are fairly amateur, i feel the festival would benefit from a more professional branding. Something of which i can adhere to with my film festival. 

Screamfest LA also presents an award ceremony for the featured films, actors and directors. Here is their excellent golden skull trophy, an item i can create with my film festival, (my own version of course).

NYC Horror Film Festival

Looking into existing horror film festivals, this one is a good find. NYC holds its horror festival annually, horror film lovers eat the 4 days worth of popcorn and marvel at the onslaught of 50-60 horror films, held at the world famous Tribeca Cinemas NYC.

Red seems to be such a classic horror colour, it seems only red to be fitting for such an event. Old English typefaces and distroyed/bloodsplat effects throughout add to the classic horror film style. The transformation of the Statue of Liberty, horrifying it, works really well to link horror with NYC. 

Further blood splats are added to the festival photographs, this just adds to the whole theme of horror.

NYCHFF also present awards to film makers, actors, and other categories, this is another area i can design in my horror film festival.

This is the submission form to enter the festival, as you can see its not so easy on the eyes, i think there is room for a more well designed submission form for my festival.
